MEDICAL ASSISTANCE FOR EU AND NON-EU CITIZENS
MEDICAL ASSISTANCE FOR EU CITIZENS
If you are an EU citizen and you are temporarily in Italy, you can have direct access to the care you need by presenting your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or its equivalent certificate. In this case, the health service of your country will pay directly for the health services provided by the health facilities or by the affiliated public or private doctors. You will need to pay the ticket (individual contribution to the cost of the health service), which will not be reimbursed to you.
The service guaranteed by using the EHIC does not apply to services provided by health facilities or private professionals not affiliated with the National Health Service (or outside the conventions).
You are not allowed to use the EHIC or its equivalent certificate to obtain cost coverage outside of necessary care.
MEDICAL ASSISTANCE FOR NON-EU CITIZENS
If you are a foreign citizen from a country that does not belong to the European Union, temporarily present in Italy with a tourist visa for a period not exceeding 90 days, you can take advantage of urgent or non-urgent healthcare services upon payment of the relevant fees established by the Lazio Region.
If your country has bilateral mutual assistance agreements with Italy, managing health expenses could follow the same rules as EU citizens. For all other cases, consult the Ministry of Health website.
